Nana's Frugal Money Saving Tip of the Day
Home Made Silverware Polish !!
As I as sifting through and organizing my silverware drawer tonight- the task brought a smile to my face immediately as I thought of my mother ( pictured to the left here ) , whom I miss very much that passed away 20 years ago ( I was only 27 to have lost my mother- just for the record if your trying to do the math- I'm now 47. Now how does my ordinary every day silverware drawer remind me of my mother you may ask? Well seeing how it looked a bit dingy I got that hovering feeling over me :) That Mamma would not be so proud of my silver ware and could see her tisk tisking me and grabbing a polishing rag.
Remember I am Italian here, so everything has a story with it........As young child my parents were both Antique Dealers and before every big show you could count that you were part of the Silver Polishing Crew to get everything shinny - Mind you I hated that stinky job and probably spent more time finger painting that goup on and making designs than I did polishing. But she always would say " oh how pretty you make it lil one" and reward us with the most yummy Italian home baked goodies. Yup I was in it for the food- what Italian girl wouldn't be !!!
Later in life - Polishing my mothers silver set that was handed down to me for Holiday Meals I came to find a very easy and inexpensive way to do this with out paying that high price or having to ever smell that "stinky stuff" and since I outgrew finger painting , well...
You need 3 Things that every household has
Aluminum Foil
Salt
Water
Its called an ion exchange, a molecular reaction in which aluminum acts as a catalyst. All you have to do is line a pan with a sheet of aluminum foil, fill it with cold water, and add two teaspoons of salt. Drop your tarnished silverware into the solution, let it sit for two to three minutes, then rinse off and buff it dry - walla like you polished by hand all day !!!
Thanks for the Memory from Heaven Momma, p.s I'm still trying to find that missing ingredient in your recipe you deliberately forgot to write down in that cake mix to me- how about sending that one down.....
