I decided today after getting home for a nice drive and afternoon out with my hubby , that I had baked a cake this week and still half of it was left , so wanted to try my hand at making cake balls . Here is my step by step with pictures below ! I used only 1/4 of the 9X13 Sheet Cake and made 10 cake balls. Only 9 on the plate- wanna guess where the other is? yummmmStep #1 - Start with a premade cake of your choice, this one happens to be a box cake mix with a frosting drizzle on it. I took 1/4 of the cake and rolled it into balls. At first it wanted to crumble but it came together into balls quite easily. If yours is just a cake with no frosting, I suggest a little chocolate syrup or melt some canned frosting and mix it in so you can form balls. Make them the size you desire.
Step # 2 - Melt your Chocolate. What I happened to use was Chocoley Chocolate Melts (milk chocolate) that I got for free , and a bottle of their choclate lavea a coupple of weeks ago from thier facebook promotion. They were super easy to melt int he microwave. Probably one of the easiest chocolate melts I have ever used. I had to only stir one time during the process !
Step # 3 - Dip Your Cake Balls in Melted Chocolate . I dipped mine with tongs I dipped each cake ball and transfered them to a cookie sheet then popped them in the freezer for about 10 minutes to set up. * Do not use a glass plate you will have trouble getting them off. Simply use a cookie sheet and give it a light coat of non stick spray
Step #4 - Remove from Freezer and transfer to a pretty serving tray and watch your faimly devoure them!
How Many Will a Cake Mix Make? I used only 1/4 of the sheet cake and it made (10) cake balls , so a full cake /whole cake will make aproximatly 40 cake balls, depending on size, as you can see I made mine big! I used 1/2 Lb of the Chocolate Melts - so I would guess to say you would need 2lbs of chocolate for 40 cake balls for a full order.
Variations - You can decorate them any way you would like, with sprinkles, coconut etc. Use white candy or colored candy melts to make different colors. You can use sticks and place them on that , then cover a styrophom tube with foil and pop in there, or a decorated plant pot with styrophom in it, and cover the top with easter grass to make an edible center peice for your easter dinner table !
